WhatsApp now rolls out support for HD videos

Just last week, WhatsApp made a notable announcement about its inclusion of HD photo support, granting users the ability to share high-definition images with their contacts. This update allowed users to retain the original high-resolution quality of the photos they wished to share. Alongside this, the company hinted at the imminent arrival of HD video support. And today, TechCrunch has confirmed that WhatsApp has indeed started rolling out HD video support to both iOS and Android users.

Similar to the HD photos feature, the HD videos feature offers users the flexibility to share videos in high definition through WhatsApp. Previously, videos were compressed to a resolution of 480p due to the app’s previous resolution limitations. However, with this latest update, users can now choose to send videos in HD, with a maximum resolution of 720p.

The process for sharing HD videos on WhatsApp is quite similar to that of sharing HD photos.

Once you’ve selected the video or videos you wish to share, you’ll need to tap the newly introduced HD button located at the top of the screen. This action prompts a dialog box to appear, giving you the option to choose between Standard Quality or HD Quality for sharing. The dialog box also displays the respective file sizes associated with each option. After making your selection, you can proceed to hit the send button, just as you would for any regular video sharing.

It’s important to note that WhatsApp employs end-to-end encryption to safeguard the images and videos shared through the platform.

When the recipient receives the shared video within the app, they will notice a small HD badge on it, indicating that the video has been shared in high definition. This serves as a signal to them that the video is in HD quality, allowing them to decide whether their device has sufficient storage space and bandwidth to view the HD content at that moment.

This feature is currently being rolled out, so if you haven’t received it yet, it should be arriving on your app in the near future.
